September 3, 2021 - Whether it’s on the cover of Rolling Stone India or the front page of Forbes, there’s no doubt that all eyes are on Tamil-Canadian artist Shan Vincent de Paul ahead of his highly anticipated album release “Made in Jaffna”. Off the heels of a string of wildly successful single releases, “Made in Jaffna” delivers a raw and honest look into the resilience of the Tamil people. Specifically drawing from Shan’s family’s experience and his own personal journey, the new project serves as a true origin story containing the most turbulent details as well as the glorious moments of perseverance that brought him here today. With single’s like “Neeye Oli” and “Hard Times”, the project delivers a collaborative spirit as we sense SVDP’s ‘rise together’ mentality, celebrating culture, diversity and authentic self-expression.

The magically surreal world of “Made in Jaffna” is a story of a community of people that have been displaced and ignored who have now found their voices through the Tamil-diaspora. Leading up to the album release, Shan has channeled the power of music to not only merge cultures, but also art forms. By featuring fashionable clothing provided by a diverse set of designers from all over the world, he coordinates their respective cultures where couture meets the ancient past and avant garde intersects with traditional gowns.

By contrast, the video for the album's title track proves more minimalist as we focus-in on SVDP’s natural storytelling rather than elaborate clothing or surrounding aesthetics. Dropping just a few days after the full project release, the “Made in Jaffna” video was shot on sight in Chennai during his first ever tour through India. He felt at home during the video shoot, which shows during each raw and vulnerable shot of SVDP rapping his life story. Hands down the most vulnerable track on the album “Made in Jaffna” lets listeners know about the obstacles he had to overcome to get to where he is today. The cinematographer, Sai Munish, did a brilliant job of capturing the city’s history as well as SVDP’s life journey surrounded by familiar settings.
