Folk Artist Denitia Envisions ReUniting with an “Old Friend” in Nostalgic New Single

Listen to “Old Friend” Here

8/12/2022 - Inching closer to her Fall album release, singer-songwriter Denitia gears up to release a heartfelt, sentimental track entitled “Old Friend”. The overarching theme of Denitia’s latest singles have branched from the collective feelings of isolation during the pandemic. The time removed from chaos introduced an opportunity for Denitia to truly dive into introspective storytelling inspired by nostalgia and a desire to reconnect with her roots. In “Old Friend”, we sway to the delicate guitar strums as she thinks on fond memories of interactions with people she hasn’t seen in a while. Daydreaming, Denitia envisions what it might be like to interact with an old friend, wondering if the connection would naturally reignite or if they would feel like strangers.

“Forgive me if I’m doing that thing, Where folks romance all that was / But my memory was dark

and it cleared, and you were standing here” ~ Old Friend

At the beginning of lockdown, Denitia spent a lot of late nights listening to old records she used to love when she was young. During her reflections on the past, she was filled with many questions about why old relationships ended and how despite the distance, the personal connection still holds strong. Missing people is natural to the human experience and Denitia provides a seamless instrumental backdrop to strong feelings of nostalgia. Nostalgia, yearning and sentimentality provide a complex range of emotions, but what Denitia does brilliantly is she captures all of it in a continuation of heart-on-sleeve single releases leading up to her “Highways” project on October 14th of this year.

About Denitia: Inspired by her southern roots, Denitia begins to establish a newfound American utopia, uplifted by wistful vocals and the buoyant chimes of tambourine. Originally from the Houston area, Denitia currently lives in New York’s Hudson Valley. Soulful and passionate, Denitia sings with intentional restraint, seeking an outlet from isolation, a break from monotony, and a dream for the past reclaimed. As a teenager in a trailer in the woods, she spent her days studying the art of rock, alt-grunge, and self-revelation, melding it with her baseline in traditional roots music. Self-taught and unafraid, Denitia improvised her newfound language with the guitar and keyboard, and gained confidence performing at praise and worship services. Denitia’s past releases have received high praises from notable publications like the Village Voice, NPR and the New York Times. Most recently, Denitia performed on the legendary Paste Magazine and she received high praises from Wonderland Magazine, LadyGunn and Stereogum. She has performed for popular platform COLORS and has placed her music on the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning feature “Nanny”, FX’s “Better Things”, Comedy Central’s Broad City and so much more. She has shared stages with SZA, The Internet, and Tank and the Bangas with prominent festival features at SXSW, Afropunk and the Firefly Music Festival.
