Oakland’s Most Influential Queer Rock Band Copyslut Releases Their Transformative New Single “The Offering”
Dynamic Cabaret-Rock band Copyslut is back with their compelling track “The Offering” which is set to release on December 6th. “The Offering” sonically recreates a Broadway musical meets hard rock concert, creating a larger than life experience which emulates the nonlinear journey of healing and transformation. In the beginning, the track sounds mournful and earnest. It quickly transitions to polka-tortured circus verses before its chorus blasts us with the power of rock and roll. The progression of the track offers up elegant similarities to RENT the musical’s anthemic song “La Vie Boheme”. Lyrically, Copyslut stays in tune with their ethos, which is to educate and heal listeners through their music. Lyrics like “Blue ribbons of my body, letting go, letting go, keep them somewhere only we know, only we know” depict the act of shedding emotional weight and trusting that the answers to healing can be found within. “We explore themes of self harm, trauma bonding, the up and down/ push and pull of abuse cycles as well as acceptance, self celebration, compassion and the metamorphosis of healing.” says lead singer Chatz of Love.
This song is truly a journey, leading listeners down a transformative path of peace and accepting of what is. Its final message is not unlike the serenity prayer “Accepting what we cannot not change, changing what we can and the wisdom to know the difference.” Inspired by the turbulence that comes with oppression within the sex worker community, “The Offering” gives us an emotional expedition that ends brighter and more hopeful than the pain that is felt when it begins. “At the time, Chatz was processing the violent impacts of outside oppression within a relationship between her and a fellow sex worker, and this song was an attempt at reckoning with that violence” says lead guitarist Ray Zamora. Chatz of Love moves on to say “We end with a sex worker celebratory mantra “strong thighs, hips wide, laboring bodies, don’t hide” - it honors all forms of reproductive labor and helps me feel into my power being an out sex worker on stage.”
Copyslut has had an incredibly transformative year. Their success in bringing together an international community of sex workers with their zine Don’t Hate My Heels: A Confrontation With Whorephobia In Which The Whores Win as well as their local impact, inviting San Fransisco’s queer community to together, create unforgettable art, this band is quickly becoming one of the most impactful of their time. “The Offering” follows their two lead singles “Neon Razberries” and “Makers Mark”. It also precedes their highly anticipated album “Sex, Death and Other People’s Money” set to release at the top of next year.
